AUDITIONS
Seventeen-year-old Evan Hansen has felt invisible his entire life. But when a tragedy shocks his community and thrusts him into the center of a rapidly evolving controversy, Evan is given the opportunity of a lifetime: the chance to be somebody else. As his web of well-intentioned lies begins to unravel, though, Evan is forced to confront the fact that the price of belonging may be far steeper than he bargained for.
Dear Evan Hansen explores mental health, grief, and human connection. We are committed to creating a safe, respectful rehearsal environment and encourage performers to care for themselves throughout the audition and rehearsal process.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
EVAN HANSEN (Male-Presenting, Playable Age 17) • Pop Tenor: G2-B4
An anxious, deeply empathetic high school senior who feels invisible and longs to be seen and understood. Evan struggles with social anxiety and isolation, but beneath his awkward exterior is a sincere, hopeful young man who wants to connect and belong. His journey forces him to confront the consequences of lies born from loneliness and the complexity of mental health, grief, truth, and forgiveness.
ZOE MURPHY (Female-Presenting, Playable Age 16) • Pop Soprano: F3-E5
Connor’s younger sister. Intelligent, guarded, and emotionally complex, Zoe has spent much of her life overshadowed by her brother’s struggles. She is wary of false sentiment but yearns for authenticity and peace. Her connection with Evan allows her to explore vulnerability and hope on her own terms.
CONNOR MURPHY (Male-Presenting, Playable Age 17) • Pop Bari-Tenor: G2-G4
A troubled, volatile student who feels disconnected from those around him. Connor is often angry and unpredictable, masking profound pain and loneliness. After his death, Connor’s presence continues to shape the story, representing the weight of unresolved trauma and the stories we tell about one another.
ALANA BECK (Female-Presenting, Playable Age 17) • Pop Soprano: F3-E5
An overachieving, hyper-involved student who appears confident and composed but is driven by her own need to be noticed and validated. Alana believes deeply in making a difference and uses activism and leadership as a way to cope with her fear of insignificance.
JARED KLEINMAN (Male-Presenting, Playable Age 17) • Pop Tenor: A2-B4
Evan’s family friend and reluctant confidant. Wry, sarcastic, and socially savvy, Jared uses humor and detachment to shield himself from vulnerability. Though he often appears self-interested, Jared ultimately longs for connection and recognition, even if he struggles to show it.
HEIDI HANSEN (Female-Presenting, Playable Age Late 30s - 40s) • Pop Mezzo Soprano: F3-Eb5 (belt)
Evan’s single mother. Loving, practical, and exhausted, Heidi works tirelessly to provide for her son while grappling with guilt over not always being present. She deeply wants to understand Evan and protect him, even when she does not fully grasp his inner world. Strong, grounded, and emotionally honest.
CYNTHIA MURPHY (Female-Presenting, Playable Age Late 30s - 40s) • Pop Soprano F#3-E5 (belt)
Connor and Zoe’s mother. Polished, compassionate, and grieving, Cynthia clings to the idea that her son was understood and accepted. Her need for connection and meaning in the wake of loss makes her both tender and vulnerable, driving much of the emotional momentum of the story.
LARRY MURPHY (Male-Presenting, Playable Age Late 30s - 40s) • Pop Bari/Tenor F#2-G4
Connor and Zoe’s father. Stoic, pragmatic, and emotionally guarded, Larry processes grief differently than his wife. He values honesty and struggles with the narratives forming around Connor’s death. Beneath his reserved exterior is a father grappling with regret and the limits of understanding his child.
ENSEMBLE / STUDENTS (Playable Age 16-18)
The ensemble portrays students and members of the online and offline community. They serve as both observers and participants in Evan’s story, embodying the pervasive presence of social media, public opinion, and collective empathy.
