AUDITIONS

Little Shop of Horrors is a wildly entertaining musical comedy that blends sci-fi, horror, and doo-wop into one unforgettable show. Set on Skid Row, the story follows Seymour, a shy flower shop assistant who discovers a mysterious plant with an unusual appetite and an even bigger plan for world domination.

As the plant, Audrey II, grows, so do Seymour’s dreams of love, success, and escape from his bleak reality. But fame and fortune come at a cost, and Seymour soon learns that feeding his ambitions may mean losing his soul. Featuring an iconic score by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, the musical includes fan-favorite songs like “Suddenly, Seymour,” “Skid Row,” and “Feed Me.”

Darkly funny, fast-paced, and delightfully offbeat, Little Shop of Horrors is a cult classic that asks how far we’re willing to go to get what we think we deserve, and whether the price is ever worth paying.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

AUDITION MATERIAL WILL BE UPLOADED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Seymour Krelborn
A shy, awkward, and kind-hearted floral shop employee who has spent most of his life being overlooked. Seymour is gentle, intelligent, and deeply insecure, with a longing to be loved, respected, and seen as someone who matters. When he discovers a strange and fascinating plant, he suddenly finds himself swept into unexpected fame, moral compromise, and increasingly impossible choices. Seymour’s journey balances comedy, vulnerability, romance, and darkness, requiring an actor with strong storytelling instincts, excellent comic timing, and emotional depth.

Vocal Range: A2 - G4
Character Notes: Seymour should feel endearing, earnest, and human rather than cartoonish. He is not a traditional leading man, but his heart, humor, and desperation drive the story.

Audrey
A kind, vulnerable, and deeply compassionate floral shop employee who dreams of a life beyond Skid Row. Audrey has endured hardship and mistreatment, but she has not lost her capacity for tenderness, hope, or love. She is warm, funny, sincere, and quietly resilient, with a romantic imagination that helps her believe in the possibility of something better. Her journey requires an actor who can balance comedy with emotional honesty, bringing depth and dignity to a character who is often underestimated by the world around her.

Vocal Range: G#3 - D5
Character Notes: Audrey should never be treated as a caricature. The role asks for vulnerability, humor, strength, and a generous heart. Her softness is not weakness, and her dreams are central to the emotional core of the story.

Mr. Mushnik
The owner of the struggling flower shop on Skid Row, Mr. Mushnik is a weary, practical, and often exasperated businessman trying to keep his shop afloat. He can be gruff, impatient, and self-interested, but he is also funny, theatrical, and surprisingly sentimental when it serves him. His relationship with Seymour is complicated by affection, opportunity, and manipulation, creating room for both broad comedy and genuine character work. The role requires strong comic timing, confidence with heightened text, and the ability to play both bluster and vulnerability.

Vocal Range: G2 - F4
Character Notes: Mr. Mushnik should be grounded in human stakes rather than played as a one-note curmudgeon. He is funny because he is desperate, calculating, and deeply invested in survival.

Orin Scrivello / Customer / Patrick Martin / Mr. Bernstein / Mrs. Luce
A featured character track for a bold, versatile, and fearless comedic actor. Primarily appearing as Orin Scrivello, a swaggering, sadistic dentist with a dangerous ego and a flair for theatrical intimidation, this actor also transforms into a variety of eccentric Skid Row figures, including a customer, Patrick Martin, Mr. Bernstein, and Mrs. Luce. This track requires the ultimate character actor: someone with sharp instincts, physical specificity, vocal flexibility, and the ability to make each role distinct, memorable, and wildly entertaining.

Vocal Range: Baritone/Tenor
Character Notes: Orin and the additional roles should be heightened, funny, and larger than life, while still grounded in clear character choices. This role is ideal for an actor who loves transformation, bold comedic risk, and creating a full world of characters through voice, movement, timing, and imagination.

JARED KLEINMAN (Male-Presenting, Playable Age 17) • Pop Tenor: A2-B4
Evan’s family friend and reluctant confidant. Wry, sarcastic, and socially savvy, Jared uses humor and detachment to shield himself from vulnerability. Though he often appears self-interested, Jared ultimately longs for connection and recognition, even if he struggles to show it.

HEIDI HANSEN (Female-Presenting, Playable Age Late 30s - 40s) • Pop Mezzo Soprano: F3-Eb5 (belt)
Evan’s single mother. Loving, practical, and exhausted, Heidi works tirelessly to provide for her son while grappling with guilt over not always being present. She deeply wants to understand Evan and protect him, even when she does not fully grasp his inner world. Strong, grounded, and emotionally honest.

CYNTHIA MURPHY (Female-Presenting, Playable Age Late 30s - 40s) • Pop Soprano F#3-E5 (belt)
Connor and Zoe’s mother. Polished, compassionate, and grieving, Cynthia clings to the idea that her son was understood and accepted. Her need for connection and meaning in the wake of loss makes her both tender and vulnerable, driving much of the emotional momentum of the story.

LARRY MURPHY (Male-Presenting, Playable Age Late 30s - 40s) • Pop Bari/Tenor F#2-G4
Connor and Zoe’s father. Stoic, pragmatic, and emotionally guarded, Larry processes grief differently than his wife. He values honesty and struggles with the narratives forming around Connor’s death. Beneath his reserved exterior is a father grappling with regret and the limits of understanding his child.

ENSEMBLE / STUDENTS (Playable Age 16-18)
The ensemble portrays students and members of the online and offline community. They serve as both observers and participants in Evan’s story, embodying the pervasive presence of social media, public opinion, and collective empathy.
